5 – EASE PAIN AND ACCELERATE HEALING: In 2015, the US FDA warned that anti-inflammatory drugs, with the exception of aspirin, could cause heart attacks and strokes. And, interestingly, aspirin and red light eliminate pain in the same way, by reducing an enzyme called COX-2.
What we do know for certain is that safer and more effective treatments are needed to reduce the chronic pain some people experience. Here are the findings of a 2009 scientific study published in the medical journal The Lancet: “We show that SLE Therapy reduces pain immediately after treatment in patients with acute neck pain and up to 22 weeks after the end of treatment in patients with chronic neck pain.
Dr. Harry Whelan of the Medical College of Wisconsin has been studying red light in cell cultures and humans for decades. His laboratory work has shown that skin and muscle cells grown in cultures exposed to infrared LED light grew 150-200% faster than control cultures not stimulated by red light.
6 – INCREASE BONE DENSITY: Bone density and the body’s ability to maintain healthy bones are important for the elderly and people recovering from illness. Anyone who wants to stay physically active for as long as possible has an interest in building and maintaining strong, healthy bones.
The beneficial effects of red light and near-infrared light on bone healing have been demonstrated in numerous laboratory studies. In 2013, researchers in São Paulo, Brazil, studied the effects of red light and near-infrared light on the healing of rat bones.
The study revealed “a significant increase in the degree of mineralization in both groups treated with red light after 7 days” and, interestingly, after 14 days, only the group also treated with near-infrared light had higher bone density. Other studies on the treatment of bones with red light and near infrared light reach the same conclusions.
7 – HEALING ARTHRITIS: Arthritis is a disabling disease suffered by many people around the world. Currently, there are dozens of medications for arthritis, all of which have limited success, and often quite serious side effects.
Dr. Michael R. Hamblin, a professor in Harvard’s Department of Dermatology, has been experimenting with red light for decades. He is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject. In 2013, he published a study entitled: Can light be used to treat osteoarthritis?
The study tested the use of near-infrared light (810 nm) on arthritis in rats. Remarkably, after inducing arthritis in rats and treating them once with near-infrared light, inflammation was shown to be significantly reduced in just 24 hours.

8 – IMPROVE CEREBRAL FUNCTIONS: Smart medications, or cognitive enhancers, have seen a spike in popularity in recent years. They are used by many people to improve brain functions such as memory, creativity and motivation.
The positive effects of red light on brain function are significant and well established scientifically. In fact, red light and near-infrared light may well be the most powerful “nootropic” light ever discovered.
In 2013, researchers at the University of Texas applied near-infrared light to the foreheads of healthy volunteers and measured its effects on cognitive parameters, including attention, memory and mood. The treated group experienced an improvement in reaction time, memory and an increase in positive effects.
The scientists indicated that “These data imply that transcranial LED stimulation could be used as a non-invasive and effective approach to increase brain functions such as those related to cognitive and emotional dimensions”.
9 – ELIMINATES ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION: Depression affects more than 120 million people worldwide, and this is only the number of people officially diagnosed with the disease. Many resort to drugs or other solutions that increase their dopamine levels.
Yet most aspire to be free of these addictions. Existing medical treatments for anxiety and depression are toxic, tend to numb people and have even been implicated in aggressive and suicidal behaviour.
In 2009, a group of scientists at Harvard University tested the effects of infrared light on 10 subjects suffering from major depression. The researchers applied the light directly to the patients’ foreheads in a 16-minute session. “Patients showed very significant reductions in HAM-D (depression) and HAM-A (anxiety) scores after treatment, with the greatest reductions occurring after 2 weeks.
10 – INCREASE IN TESTOSTERONE: Around the age of 30, testosterone levels begin to decline in men, which can lead to many negative changes in physical and mental health: reduced sexual function, lack of energy, reduced muscle mass and increased body fat.
In 2013, a group of Korean researchers studied the impact of exposing the testes to red light (670 nm) and near-infrared light (808 nm). Thirty male rats were divided into three groups: a control group and two groups exposed to red or near-infrared light. At the end of the 5-day test, testosterone was not increased in untreated rats. Rats exposed to a 30-minute daily treatment with red and near-infrared light had significantly higher testosterone levels.
